Process Design Engineer
Role: Process Design Engineer
About TerraStor: TerraStor, a pre-seed-stage startup, is an independent energy storage provider reinventing the electrical grid by solving difficult technological problems to create low-cost, highly-responsive, extra-long duration, grid-scale energy storage for a 24/7 carbon-free energy future. Specifically we are developing advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) systems paired with large geologic storage reservoirs.
What we are looking for: TerraStor is seeking an entrepreneurial-minded engineer to collaborate with the founding team in process development engineering for its ACAES systems. This is an exciting opportunity to join a new startup that is dedicated to optimizing a thermodynamic process for very large, grid-scale applications. This may become a full-time position with equity.
Responsibilities
- Support co-founders in the design and evaluation of integrated ACAES systems, including compression, power generation, and heat retention systems
- Interface with consultants and procurement partners in order to
- Standardize our ACAES system into discrete capacity offerings based on existing component offerings
- Design a heat exchange and retention package integrated with our ACAES systems
- Support the creation of patentable IP and know-how out of our design efforts
- Work closely with our geologic team to understand the impact of geologic air storage on turbo-expansion design requirements
Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or equivalent
- 5-10 years experience in relevant fields
- Very strong understanding of thermodynamics, including fluency in various common thermodynamic cycles (Brayton, organic Rankine, etc.)
- Familiarity with turbomachinery design and operation, including support and control systems
- Familiarity with compressor design and operation
- Familiarity with process simulation software
- Familiarity with heat exchange and retention processes
- Self starter with a willingness and ability to
- Work in an unstructured, start-up environment
- Approach problems with open mindedness and creativity
- Prioritize the big picture ahead of details
- Thrive in a multi-disciplinary team environment
- Pivot quickly and flexibly as design parameters change
- Work in a collaborative and iterative fashion with colleagues, customers, and procurement partners
- Strong interpersonal skills
